As a British person who has never traveled to the United States, Michigan holds a unique fascination for me. Despite the distance, I find comfort in its rich natural beauty, culture, history, etc. From the iconic Great Lakes to its influential music scene and beautiful landscapes, Michigan compells me and resonates with my interests in ways that feel familiar and comforting, even from such a distance, just by using the internet.
History
Before European settlement, Michigan was home to Native American tribes such as the Ojibwe, Potawatomi, and Odawa. These tribes thrived in the region's abundant natural resources, relying on fishing, hunting, and agriculture for sustenance and trade.

European exploration and colonisation began in the 17th century mostly by French fur traders and missionaries who established settlements along Michigan's waterways. These early interactions influenced local cultures and introduced European technologies and goods to Native American communities. Michigan's industrialization accelerated in the 19th century, fueled by the huge amount of natural resources there and its strategic location near the Great Lakes. Iron ore deposits in the Upper Peninsula and the state's proximity to water transportation helped growth in industries like iron and steel production, which established Michigan as a manufacturing hub. The state played a pivotal role in the War of 1812, particularly with the Battle of Lake Erie in 1813, which secured American control over the Great Lakes region, showing Michigan's strategic importance in national defense and territorial expansion. Then immigration during the 19th and early 20th centuries brought waves of settlers from Europe, including German, Polish, and Scandinavian immigrants. These groups sought economic opportunities in Michigan's burgeoning industries, contributing to its cultural diversity and shaping its social landscape. Michigan faced economic challenges during the Great Depression which was impacting its manufacturing sector, and leading to labour strikes and social unrest. New Deal programs during this time helped stabilise the economy and provide some relief to struggling communities. In the mid-20th century, Michigan became synonymous with the American automotive industry, led by pioneers like Henry Ford and Ransom E. Olds. Detroit was then known as the "Motor City," with automotive manufacturing driving the state's economy and shaping urban developments. Globalisation and technological advancements in the latter half of the 20th century brought new challenges to Michigan's manufacturing sector. The state diversified its economy into sectors such as information technology, healthcare, and renewable energy, adapting to changing global economic trends.

Music
Michigan's influence on music, especially through the Motown record label, is profound. Founded in 1959 by Berry Gordy Jr. in Detroit, Motown Records created the "Motown Sound," a unique blend of soul, pop, and rhythm and blues. This sound dominated the charts in the 1960s and 1970s and launched the careers of legendary artists such as Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, Diana Ross, and The Jackson 5. The cultural impact of Motown extended beyond music, playing a role in the civil rights movement by promoting racial integration and bringing African American music into mainstream American culture.
Bands like Empire! Empire! (I Was a Lonely Estate) from Fenton, and La Dispute from Grand Rapids are loved for their emotional lyrics and intricate guitar work. Bear vs. Shark from Highland, and The Swellers from Flint brought a mix of punk and emo elements, earning dedicated followings with their energetic performances and music. These bands, along with others like Small Brown Bike, from Marshall, have contributed to Michigan's prominent role in the emo scene, reflecting the region's unique blend of raw emotion and musical innovation.

Automotives
Detroit is renowned as the heart of the American automotive industry. Detroit’s influence began in the early 20th century with pioneers like Henry Ford, who revolutionized mass production with the assembly line technique. This innovation made automobiles affordable and accessible to the average American, fundamentally changing transportation and urban development. Companies such as General Motors, Ford, and Chrysler, collectively known as the "Big Three," established Michigan as a global leader in automobile manufacturing. Detroit’s auto industry not only fueled economic growth but also set standards for manufacturing practices worldwide.

Landscapes
Michigan's landscape features a mix of natural beauty and significant landmarks. The state is bordered by four of the Great Lakes, Superior, Michigan, Huron, and Erie, offering over 3,000 miles of coastline. The Upper Peninsula is known for its rugged terrain, forests, and the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, which has colourful sandstone cliffs and waterfalls. In the Lower Peninsula, Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore has large sand dunes and views of Lake Michigan. The Mackinac Bridge connects the Upper and Lower Peninsulas, spanning five miles across the Straits of Mackinac. Key historic sites include Mackinac Island, with its 19th-century architecture and car-free streets, and the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn.
